A Press-Fit connector is a solderless electrical interconnection solution designed to connect a connector terminal directly to a plated-through hole (PTH) on a printed circuit board (PCB). Instead of soldering, the connector relies on a precisely engineered compliant Press-Fit zone to establish both electrical contact and mechanical retention.

During assembly, the Press-Fit terminal is mechanically pressed into the properly dimensioned PCB hole. The compliant section temporarily deforms under insertion force and generates controlled contact pressure against the plated inner wall of the PTH. Once fully inserted, the elastic recovery of the terminal maintains continuous contact, forming a stable and reliable electrical connection.

The Press-Fit terminal is designed with a compliant section whose effective dimensions are slightly larger than the corresponding PCB plated-through hole.

When the terminal is pressed into the PTH, the flexible section undergoes controlled elastic deformation and contracts to facilitate insertion. At the same time, the deformed contact area applies radial force to the plated hole wall.

After insertion, the elastic recovery of the Press-Fit terminal maintains sufficient contact force between the terminal and the PCB plating. This creates a reliable electromechanical interconnection with low and stable contact resistance, while the mechanical interference provides secure retention.

The performance of the Press-Fit connection is determined by the precise matching of the terminal geometry, material, plating, PCB hole diameter, hole tolerance, and PTH plating thickness.
